Final Exam II
I really enjoy learning about the different ways people connect using specifically the internet. I had never known all of the different applications that people use to speak, vent, and discuss personal issues. It seems like after taking this class and learning about media literacy I notice the ways in which people communicate on the internet level as well as peoples need for communication with...

After the brick experiment, I wanted to see if anyone else on the internet had thought of things to do with a brick. I was surprised to see how many people put 50 plus uses for a brick on their blogs. Blogs are a medium of expression that is very new to me, and I find it interesting how much personal, pointless, meaningful, information people put onto their blogs.

The experiment we tried doing in class made me think about subliminal advertising and its effectiveness. This Absolut advertisement makes me think of how the Apple logo may have a subliminal message on viewers. The constant logo of the bottle found in every advertisement in every medium can make viewers try and find the bottle in everything that they look at, constantly subconsciously reminding...

The movie we watched in class called “How to Get Ahead in Advertising” made me think about how other products that are not glamorous are advertised. I looked at tampon advertisements since often feminine hygiene products are not thought of as glamorous. This advertisement truly shows how unglamorous products are advertised as embarrassing. The tampon’s feature is that it can be hidden in your...

After the assignment of looking at docile bodies in the media, it made me think of how much I loved the Dove campaign. The new Dove campaign uses normal women varying in height, weight, color, etc and uses them in simple white bikinis to promote their product. The campaign is highly successful because I think women are sick of seeing the docile bodies and feeling like they are a standard to live...

After we looked at Andres Serrano and the “Piss Christ” I decided to look up more of his controversial images. I found his image of “Blood and Semen II” and found it quite disturbing and even more alarming was the fact that it was the cover for the Metallica CD “Load.” I have never truly looked at the cover of the CD and was surprised that a band such as Metallica used art like Serrano’s to...

The Miley Cyrus pictures with her covering herself with a sheet, have been talked about constantly in the news. Parents are outraged by her decision to go topless, however, I believe that this argument is pointless. The photos were for Vanity Fair, a magazine not read by many impressionable teenagers, yet because the media stirred up controversy the pictures are on every news station. Without...

We have looked at the media and especially advertising during the semester. I was thinking about how risqué advertising has become and how the message of the advertisement is sometimes lost due to provocative imagery. This example of Tom Ford’s advertisement really pushes the limits of sexual advertising, making the perfume of Tom Ford forgettable, and the shock of the advertisement memorable.

We have spoken a lot about the candidates in class and how the media has perceived all of the candidates. This photo of Hilary Clinton shows how ruthless the media is in attacking candidates, and making issues out of unimportant things like appearance rather than the issues of each person. It shows how the media turns pointless issues into news, ignoring important issues such as the Iraq war. ...

In my gender communication class we discussed the controversial topic of the Yale student who used blood to make paintings. Although her use of blood is slightly disturbing, the story gets worse when the blood she was using was from miscarriages. The student was impregnating herself and performing self abortions and using the blood as art. With the discussion of art and post modern art, it is...

We discussed the youtube video of the cheerleaders fighting and how it sparked many other videos of abuse to pop up on the website. Although I believe that the material on youtube should be monitored to some degree, I believe it is the responsibility of the parent to monitor the child and the content of what the child views. Today we are bombarded with all sorts of media, however, parents need...

docile bodies
I found three advertisements that I think display the best examples possible of docile bodies. Each advertisement shows ideal bodies that the public desires to look like and believes is the standard of perfection. I chose both female and male images to show the perfect body of each sex. All the advertisements are for fashion companies, which are the most notorious for sexual images of beautiful...

The book defines glamour in the way that advertising uses famous people and models that seem to be almost perfect in personality and looks. The consumers desire to be like the models and celebrities often to the point of buying whatever product they are advertising for. In the movie, the main character struggles with the product he is advertising for because it is the opposite of glamour. Boil...

Prior to seeing this movie, I had never heard of Edward Bernays. Being a communication major, and a psychology minor, I thought all of the content of the movie was truly interesting. The most interesting perhaps was the part about trying to get women to smoke. The idea of a cigarette representing a penis, and giving women their “penis” or independence was a brilliant way of manipulating the...

Heath Ledger
On Tuesday Heath Ledger sadly passed away. I did not know of his death until I walked into my house and the first thing my housemate said to me was “did you hear?” I shook my head not knowing what she meant and she proceeded to tell me. This was around six o’clock on Tuesday, only a few hours after he was found. After she told me I went upstairs to my room where I went online and was bombarded...
Kleenex
Every moment of everyday we are bombarded with media. Today I chose to focus upon how media and advertising has become such a part of daily life we no longer notice it anymore. Take the example of Kleenex. Kleenex has made such progress in advertising and putting the product in the daily life of society, that it has come to often replace the word tissue. Most likely I will ask for a Kleenex...
Canadian PSA
So as I was on the internet I was just on the AOL website and came across a new campaign that Canada is doing for PSAs concerning work safety. Prior to watching the ads I did not think they would be as graphic as they were. Although the shock factor is present, and as an advertising major I do think it is effective in scaring people into taking action I was surprised at how graphic the images...
volleyball tatto
I am not a huge volleyball fan whatsoever, so when I was mindlessly watching a game the other day something caught my attention. I remember when I was younger the argument about girls being forced to wear bikinis as the uniform, however I never thought about this in an advertising sense. There is a demographic who are involved in pro volleyball and I imagine an entire world of specialty...
facebook
I often spend some downtime that I have on the computer, logged onto facebook. As I am sure you know what facebook is, I had never in my countless times of logging in noticed the personalized ads or “flyers.” These little notifications on the left hand side I normally do not read, however the picture on the flyer was of someone I knew, and of someone I was facebook friends with. I think...
